Introductory Blog Post: Moses Sghayyer

May 22, 2018 by Moses Sghayyer

My name is Moses Sghayyer and I just finished my first year at Georgia Tech. I am in the 3-2 program and completed an Applied Math major at Emory. At Georgia Tech, I am working towards a degree in Biomedical Engineering and anticipate to graduate in May 2019. I am in the in-person course on Tuesdays and Thursdays and my other obligations this summer include two biomedical engineering courses.

At Emory, I took a course called the Sociology of Happiness as my English course. We journaled a lot and I got to channel in my emotions for the day through this writing. We spoke about injustice in the world and the importance to remain happy and optimistic. We also spent a lot of class time with animals and in nature in order to find happiness in our surroundings. I have not taken any English courses at Georgia Tech yet. Although I do enjoy communicating verbally, I did struggle with communicating through lengthy essays. I hope to improve this skill during this class as I will try my best to combine my personal opinions with research online to produce well written pieces.

Although I have heard of Hamilton before, I have never seen it or listened to any of the music. I have heard of people going to an expensive show but I never looked into what the story was about. This is because although I love movies, I have never really been a fan of musicals due to the breaks in a story’s plot. When things get intense, the cast breaks into a 5 minute song! I love music and I love film, but I do not know if their union is my favorite thing. I am excited to learn about musicals during this class though and give them a chance! Finally, a fun fact about me is that I love soccer and my favorite player is Mohammed Salah!

Intro Post

May 22, 2018 by Ye Jun Kim

Hi everyone, My name is Ye Jun Kim, and I am a Computational Media major, anticipating to graduate in 2021. I am taking this course online, but I am still at Tech! I am taking CS 1331 right now, along with this class, so I live near campus.

I actually took English 1101 with Dr. Wilson Fall semester. The theme during that class was play, so I was able to explore different kinds of play and how we can communiate with these forms of play.

My favorite kind of communicaton is visual. I really like drawing and looking at art pieces and how emotion is conveyed through those artworks.

As i have said in one of my tweets, I am a first generation immigrant. I came to America when I was in third grade, so I can speak English well enough to communicate, but I struggle with communicating effectively. I hope to improve this kind of communication as I progress throughout the course.

I don’t really have a direct experience with the course, but I think I’ve heard a couple of the songs while shuffling through youtube a long time ago. I really like musicals because I enjoy listening to music and the songs having to tell a story. I don’t know about showtunes, but I enjoy listening to movie soundtracks and I guess they can be similar in a way that they music enhaces the story.

I’m not a very big fan of hip-hop, but I really like Chance the Rapper, and music similar to his style of music. I usually listen to modern jazz or indie music, and now days, there are a lot of modern jazz songs featuring rappers, which is really cool and interesting to listen to.

The picture above is an artwork done by my favorite artist, Seonglib. It is a drawing of a couple kissing.

Introduction: Arfa Ul-Haque

May 22, 2018 by Arfa Ul-Haque

Hello everyone! My name is Arfa Ul-Haque and I am a biochemistry major on a pre-health track. I hope to graduate in May 2021. I am part of the in-person section of the English 1102 course and am also taking Physics 2 on campus. This course is the first English class that I am taking at Tech. My favorite literature class that I have taken so far is AP Literature. I had a really great teacher who helped me improve my writing and taught me how to analyze of a variety of genres of literature. I especially liked our examination of poetry and the in-depth analysis of the books we read, like The Invisible Man and The Handmaid’s Tale.

The parts of communication that I enjoy are visual and written. As a commuter, I spend a lot of time reading so I love the written aspect of communication and exploring how various authors write differently based on the genre they are writing and the tone they are trying to convey. I also like the visual aspect because I learn best through visual demonstrations. The communication aspect that I struggle most with is oral communication, as I get anxious when speaking in front of large groups of people. I hope to improve my written and oral communication to become more efficient at writing and more confident in public speaking.

I first heard Hamilton a few months after it initially was released in 2015, so I’m pretty familiar with the musical. Once I was introduced to it, I was immediately captured by the lyrical genius that is Lin-Manuel Miranda.

I love how he incorporated so many different elements of hip hop into the musical and the overall historical accuracy he maintained while writing the script. After listening to Hamilton, I became familiar with other musicals made by Lin-Manuel Miranda, including In the Heights and the mini-musical 21 Chump Street. Since then, I’ve become a fan of many other musicals including Dear Evan Hansen, Into the Woods, and Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812.

Overall, I’m excited for this course and to learn more about Hamilton!

Introductory Blog Entry #1 Kelton Dawson

May 22, 2018 by Kelton Dawson

By: Kelton Dawson

0My name is Kelton Dawson I’m a business major and I’m anticipated to graduate in the year 2021. I’m from Stockbridge Ga, I don’t really have any summer activities because my time is filled up with football and working out.

My previous experiences with English courses aren’t too bad, but I have noticed that I struggle with the writing part of the communication element. I enjoy the nonverbal element the most because you can be able to understand things and think harder about things that don’t use words. I enjoy that because it makes you work harder to find the exact meaning.  I want to improve more than just the writing element I also would like to improve my oral communication also.

I have never had an experience anything with this course theme, and I have never heard or seen Hamilton. I have no idea on what Hamilton did in the past but from the previous few days of class I can see that he was great man that went through a lot to get to the level he was at. I don’t dislike musical but they are not my most fav thing to focus on. I love hip hop though that is the only thing I listen to I don’t listen to anything.

Outside of class, I grew up in Atlanta and I have played football since I can remember at the age of six years old. I grew up playing football and basketball. People would be surprised at how much football and school are very much alike.

I am very interested in taking this course and finding out more things that I lack knowledge about. I also want to learn how music and the other different deal with this course and theme.

Document Excerpts:

[Camp near Dobbs Ferry, New York]

[July 10, 1781]

The day before yesterday, my angel, I arrived here, but for the want of an opportunity could not write you sooner. Indeed, I know of none now, but shall send this to the Quarter Master General to be forwarded by the first conveyance to the care of Col. Hughes. Finding when I came here that nothing was said on the subject of a command, I wrote the General a letter and enclosed him my commission. This morning Tilghman came to me in his name, pressed me to retain my commission, with an assurance that he would endeavor by all means to give me a command nearly such as I could have desired in the present circumstances of the army. Though I know my Betsy would be happy to hear I had rejected this proposal, it is a pleasure my reputation would not permit me to afford her. I consented to retain my commission and accept my command.

I hope my beloved Betsy will dismiss all apprehensions for my safety; unhappily for public affairs, there seems to be little prospect of activity, and if there should be Heaven will certainly be propitious to any attachment so tender, so genuine as ours. Heaven will restore me to the bosom of my love and permit me to enjoy with new relish the delights which are centred there. It costs me a great deal to be absent from them, but the privation is certainly only temporary. I impatiently long to hear from you the state of your mind since our painful separation. Be as happy as you can, I entreat you, my amiable, my beloved wife. But let not absence deprive me of the least particle of your affection. Always remember those tender proofs I have so frequently given you of mine and preserve for me unabated the only blessing which can make life of any value to me.

I write your father all the military news. I have barely seen Mr. Carter and delivered him the letters which your amiable father committed to my care. You are of a charming family my Betsy. I shall not easily forget the marks of parting regret which appeared in both your sisters. Assure them of everything my heart is capable of feeling for the lovely sisters of a lovely wife.

I quarter at present by a very polite and very warm invitation with General Lincoln. I experience every mark of esteem from the officers of both armies. As soon as possible, I shall begin housekeeping myself. Mr. Carter and I are four miles asunder. Tomorrow morning I shall see him again. He is in good health and the principal French officers express great satisfaction at his conduct.

My good, my tender, my fond, my excellent Betsy, Adieu. You know not how much it must ever cost me to pronounce this word. God bless and preserve you.

A Hamilton

[New York]

[July 10, 1804]

My beloved Eliza

Mrs. Mitchel is the person in the world to whom as a friend I am under the greatest Obligations. I have ⟨not⟩ hitherto done my ⟨duty⟩ to her. But ⟨resolved⟩ to repair my omission as much as ⟨possible,⟩ I have encouraged her to come to ⟨this Country⟩ and intend, if it shall be ⟨in my po⟩wer to render the Evening of her days ⟨c⟩omfortable. But if it shall please God to put this out of my power and to inable you hereafter to be of ⟨s⟩ervice to her, I entreat you to d⟨o⟩ it and to treat ⟨h⟩er with the tenderness of a Sister.

This is my second letter.

The Scrup⟨les of a Christian have deter⟩mined me to expose my own li⟨fe to any⟩ extent rather than subject my s⟨elf to the⟩ guilt of taking the life of ⟨another.⟩ This must increase my hazards & redoubles my pangs for you. But you had rather I should die inno⟨c⟩ent than live guilty. Heaven can pre⟨se⟩rve me ⟨and I humbly⟩ hope will ⟨b⟩ut in the contrary ⟨e⟩vent, I charge you to remember that you are a Christian. God’s Will be done. The will of a merciful God must be good.

Once more Adieu My Darling darling Wife

A H

It’s Showtime by: Avery Showell

May 22, 2018 by Avery Showell

Hi everyone! My name is Avery Showell, an business adminsistration major. If i stay on the expected graduation course I am on now I will graduate in 2021. I am currently enrolled in the in-person section of the English 1101 summer course.

To be honest, this is my second time taking English 1102 after dropping it my second semester enrolled at Tech. With my previous history of the course I have a little familiarity with WOVEN text and the different types of modes. The most enjoyable part of communication to me would probably be verbal because it is the most straight forward and easy to understand. On the other hand, the most challenging would probably have to be nonverbal. Mostly because sometimes you have to decipher the meanings of different topics and ideas from using confusing documents. With that being a struggle I would hope to improve on it and be fluent in that area of WOVEN.

Before enrolling in this course I was very unfamiliar with the theme and am still learning the basic concepts of the theme. Hamilton seems to be a classic that I have never heard about but I am sure it will prove to be enjoyable. i don not watch musicals but hip hop is a part of my everyday life so I am confident that I will find something to relate to.

Outside of class, I am a safety for the Georgia Tech football team and and a Red-shirt Freshman. I grew up in Atlanta and have played football since the time I can remember at seven years old. I grew up playing football, basketball, baseball, and I also ran track. Being able to juggle multiple responsibilities has always been a task for me so this class should help bring interest to having to multi task.

Introductory Blog: TK Chimedza

May 22, 2018 by Takudzwa Chimedza

Hello, my name is TK Chimedza. I am a Business Administration major. I plan on graduating in 2021, but due to possible internships or job opportunities, I may graduate in 2022. I am a member of the Georgia Tech Football team. I love almost anything associated with athletics. As far as English, I do enjoy reading Greek Mythology. I am not a big fan of digging deep into all the aspects of certain literatures which were taught to me in the past.

Of course I am attending English 1102 this summer, but I am also taking HIST 2112 B and AMC CS. I am an in class student for the English 1102 course. If I were not a part of the Football team, I probably would have been an online student.

As far as WOVEN goes, I am pretty good with oral communication. I find it easy to translate or convey a certain message by talking about it. Where I am most inefficient is in the electronic communication of WOVEN. Using different platforms such as prezi or making a pecha kucha are very hard for me to comprehend myself, so trying to find a way to have someone else also comprehend is very hard for me. When took English 1101 last semester, I made a small improvement in my electronic communication but the progress wasn’t enough for me to successfully complete something like a presentation. With the major annotation project this semester, I plan on improving my skill level with electronic communication.

Until this class I have never heard of the Alexander Hamilton musical. I am interested in seeing if it is like most musicals or if it is unique and has its own creativity. I never really liked musicals, I always thought they were corny and the characters would always start singing at the wrong or most predictable times.

Introduction: Emily Moseley

May 22, 2018 by Emily Moseley

Hey y’all! My name’s Emily Moseley and I’m in the in-person class of Dr. Wilson’s English 1102. I’m a Mechanical Engineering major going for that Automotive Concentration and probably graduating around Spring 2021. I’m on campus this semester taking three classes and working close by. Other than work and school, I’m involved with GT Motorsports getting our racecar ready for a competition in the UK in July! (that’s the car below)

Last fall, I took English 1101 with Dr. Dean-Ruzicka. Interestingly enough, it was a class about ‘Murder in the American Culture’ which put a new twist on English class for me. I’m honestly excited for this class to be less gorry than 1101 as well as to improve my written communication skills. I am the biggest procrastinator around and I’ve been seeing how that can reflect in my writing lately. I’d like to come out of this class knowing how to start an essay or research paper in a more structured way to get rid of that writing anxiety.

I’ve never been a huge fan of musicals; however, when I started doing set design and working backstage in my high school’s theater department they quickly converted me and taught me to like a few musicals and Hamilton was one of them. I could probably recite every line in the play we listened to it so much, and I was lucky to see the full performance before the bootleg was taken down last summer. I’m excited to talk more about it since it’s been awhile since I’ve listened to the soundtrack.

Introduction to Carol Rojas Ramirez

May 21, 2018 by Carol Rojas Ramirez

Hey there! I’m Carol Rojas Ramirez (I know, it’s kind of mouthful… just imagine half of your last name cut off in your High School Diploma. I know… I was shocked too).

Just kidding… they just omitted the “Ramirez” part. It’s cool I’m totally not salty about it.

Anyways, I’m a second year Industrial Engineering major whose anticipated graduation year is 2021 (crossing my fingers). I’m enrolled in the online version of the class and I’m currently back home in Buford, Georgia. I’m actually taking three other online classes and working part time at a bookstore.  Other than that, my only obligation is tanning and fantasizing about all of the dogs I will be adopting once I graduate.

I took English 1101 last Fall with Dr. Rachel Dean-Ruzicka and had an amazing time learning about murder in America. That class really helped me improve my written communication skills. However, the part that I enjoyed the most was the visual communications aspect. We had to create a movie poster that represented the many ideas we had talked about throughout the course. I don’t fancy myself a creative person, so it was challenging but something I thoroughly enjoyed and hope that I get to do again at some point in my career. We had various projects where we had to speak in front of large audiences, which was very difficult for me do without having tiny anxiety attacks. So that’s something that I hope to work on not just during this class but throughout my time at Tech.

I have heard about Hamilton and how everyone was raving about it for a while but I haven’t heard or listened to it before. I have always despised musicals (hence my hatred for most Disney movies… actually that’s also due to Up).

*cries*

Sorry… I get distracted. But despite my hatred for musicals, I do love hip hop and rap and after listening to some of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s previous work, I am very much looking forward to experiencing Hamilton in its many forms.

As you can tell, I really like gifs and pretending that I have a sense of humor. I also enjoy reading, swimming, cooking, and playing with doggos.

Kristen English: Introduction

May 21, 2018 by Kristen English

Hi Everyone! My name is Kristen English and I am a Business Administration major with a concentration in IT Management. I am scheduled to graduate in December of 2019, so sadly I only have a few more semesters here at the Institute. I am in the online section of this course due to taking a full load of early and late summer classes on campus. I have completed an internship and am currently in the middle of rotations between a separate co-op which is the reason my scheduling of classes is so weird and I’m taking this course as a rising senior :)

A little about me; I am currently co-oping at Delta Air Lines as a project management co-op with the Airport Customer Service department. A big perk of my job is that I get to travel a lot!! I’ve been fortunate enough to go so many cool places and I am looking forward to going to many more! I participated in the Georgia Tech Oxford Study abroad program last summer and traveled all over Europe and made many new friends. My absolute favorite place I’ve traveled was the island of Capri off the coast of Naples, Italy. Ask me any time about my travels and you’d probably be stuck for an hour listening to me go on and on. Outside of traveling, I really enjoy going to Piedmont Park, hiking, and basically anything outdoors!

In terms of English courses at Tech, I took ENG 1101 my freshman year with Andrea Kraft and really enjoyed my experience. I was fortunate to have a professor who really cared about her students learning the material and picking a topic that was interesting and engaging. We worked a lot with blog posts and website creation in that course which was extremely beneficial for me because my past experiences with English courses in high school were mainly just written essay and literature based. I feel like I still have room to improve however with the technical written aspects of communication but this past course was a great introduction.

In all honesty I have never even seen a real musical other than High School Musical (which I don’t think really counts…). I do recognize the name Hamilton though and know that it is a widely known and loved musical. I am familiar with a lot of music from musicals due to my love of the TV show Glee in high school. I am also very familiar with the hip-hop genre from being a college student and living in Atlanta which is widely known to produce note-worthy artists of the genre. I am excited to learn more about Hamilton and hip-hop and how they tie into each other. I am a naturally curious person with a passion for learning new things so I am sure this semester is going to be another great experience for me as a student to broaden my horizons and learn new things!
