3.7: Generative AI in Mechanics, Materials, & Manufacturing Education

Organizers:

  • Zubaer Hossain, Texas A&M University

Description:

This symposium will showcase generative artificial intelligence (GAI) applications in mechanics, materials, and manufacturing (MM&M) education. The rapid advancement of generative AI technologies, such as ChatGPT and DALL·E, revolutionizes education across disciplines. In the MM&M fields, these tools offer transformative potential for enhancing student engagement, streamlining content delivery, and fostering deeper conceptual understanding. Specifically, GAI can advance education in subjects such as Multiscale Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Machine Design, Materials Design, and Additive Manufacturing. By enabling the teaching of advanced and interconnected topics—such as designing gears for fatigue conditions—GAI addresses challenges that are traditionally difficult to tackle in classroom lectures.

This mini-symposium explores the integration of generative AI in MM&M education by examining its applications, benefits, and challenges. Topics of interest include AI-driven personalized learning, automated problem-solving and tutoring, AI-enhanced visualization of complex concepts, and the ethical considerations of deploying such technologies in education.

By bringing together educators, researchers, and practitioners, this mini-symposium seeks to establish a collaborative platform for sharing innovative practices and strategies. Discussions will focus on how generative AI can bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world applications, enable cross-disciplinary learning, and prepare students for the evolving demands of the modern workforce. Contributions are invited on case studies, best practices, curriculum redesigns, and assessment techniques involving generative AI. The symposium will also provide an opportunity to address challenges such as ensuring equitable access, mitigating potential misuse, and balancing AI integration with traditional teaching methods.

This forum will highlight cutting-edge developments and foster dialogue on AI’s future role in reshaping MM&M education, inspiring a new era of learning innovation.”
