TECH TOWER

GEOMETRY

The Tech Tower at Georgia Tech is an iconic castle-like structure, characterized by the jutted out rooms and the sloped roof. Its towering height gives it a lofty and majestic appearance, while the iconic logo written in bold, block letters provides an unmistakable identity. It is a remarkable sight to behold, and its distinct features have made it one of the most recognizable buildings at Georgia Tech. TEXTURE

Tech Tower is an impressive brick building with dull white-painted window beams. Though it has not been painted in a long time, its intricate stone base and dark navy tiled roof still show its strength and beauty. This grand building stands tall, reminding us of the proud heritage of the school and the importance of innovation and technology. Its timeless design never fails to inspire students and visitors.

TONE AND MESSAGE

Tech Tower stands proudly on top of north avenue, overlooking the Georgia Tech campus. A culture of respect and honor is immediately noticed as one approaches the tower. The well-manicured lawns and beautiful greenery show the amount of care students and faculty take to preserve this tower. It is a trophy of the campus. The worn paint and aged brick also describe the tower’s age. One can infer that there is great history within its walls by simply acknowledging its slow destruction due to time. Finally, one can recognize the expression of achievement and success that this location is affiliated with. Many graduates in the past came here to celebrate their successes made at Georgia Tech, and that association of success with this tower is felt in all those who bask in this tower’s beauty.

SURROUNDINGS

Tech Tower is surrounded by a very rich environment. On one side of the tower, you have your admissions buildings; boxier, red brick buildings that shade the bottom half of the tower. On the other side of the tower, you have a mix of nature that surrounds it. A group of park benches, well-kept lawns, and historical artifacts present in the same location create the environment of a park, where the area that surrounds tech tower can be admired with peace and stillness. Both the environmental and the academic sides of the tower combined into one, making it a very desirable location to be present nearby.

WHAT IT REMINDS ONE OF?

The tower reminds people of the brand of Georgia Tech and instills in them a sense of belonging to their place of education. It acts as an icon of school trditions at Georgia Tech and a reservoir of memories for alumni. The T in the Tech logo is a reminder of historic pranks on campus and adds a sense of fun and joy to an otherwise ‘normal’ tower. In conclusion, the tower is a monument for the Georgia Tech community.

AB 2: Veritasium Video

In this informatory video titled, “The Simplest Math Problem No One Can Solve – Collatz Conjecture”, renowned science communicator, Youtuber, Derek Muller, gives an introduction to the Collatz Conjecture, its history, attempts to prove it and its beautiful representations. Garious points of view on the importance of and attempts to prove the conjecture are explained with interviews with mathematicians, quotations from mathematicians and scientific papers being used as evidence. The intended audience is a quasi-academic audience interested in mathematics and the scientific nature of the video along with the easy wording explains the author’s ideas very well. The author intends to create curiosity and a willingness to learn mathematics in the viewers and the audience through this intriguing yet scientific explanation.

This video is very relevant to my project given that it covers the same topic as my project and has a similar audience. However, there is a level of bias in this video, implying that only experienced mathematicians can prove the problem, as evidenced by references to renowned mathematicians Terence Tao and the ‘warning’ to young students not to work on the problem. However, I want to eliminate this in my writing given that many problems have been proven or disproven by younger people and I want to make this an empowering fact for my readers. The representations and the pictures in the second half of the video could be an important tool for me. I could use the pictures to make the content easy to understand for readers and could also quote some mathematicians to give a logical and evidence-centric base to my work

AB 1: Adichie Reading

February 13, 2023 by adalal43 1 Comment

Renowned Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngoi Adichie, in the TED Talk, “The Danger of a Single Story,” recounts her personal experience of being faced with the unintended consequences of a story to paint a picture of how stories can potentially shape perspectives. She She uses anecdotes, her experience and references to sociopolitical historical events for presenting her ideas. The main audience includes writers, who could be inspired to make their stories reflect more than one perspective, and readers, who could be inspired to not wholly consider a story to reflect factual information. Very briefly, the author aims to present the readers with the message that the truth is almost always reflective of a kaleidoscopic mosaic of differing perspectives and can be restricted by the singular perspectives offered by many stories.

I believe the TED talk is a credible one, given the credentials of the speaker and the intended audience. There is no bias given the nature of the talk and it being against bias. This could be useful in my work in terms of controlling my biased view of mathematics as an educated person. However, given my educated audience, I do not think this would be very applicable.

We tried to produce a general algorithm.

This was based on experience.

We decided to sort by color, start with corners, edges and then main features like THE girl and umbrella.

However, we later learnt that general things like this would not work because it might not be good for our image. I learnt that this could be applied to research projects in terms of applying more specific research styles.
