Research Post Discussion

  1. We will first discuss ideas as a group so that the creation of methodology is clear to everyone. Then each of us will create posts that specifically relate to our topics.
  2. Part 1: getting the main idea and supporting arguments.
    • Form: Thesis
      • Support 1 with our own thoughts
      • Support 2 with our own thoughts
      • Support 3 with our own thoughts
  3. At each step add thoughts and interpretations of the article and how it relates to your topic.
  4. Break down the topic into keywords and search the data with using these phrases.

Kubin Reading Discussion

  1. We named this post “Kubin Reading Discussion” because it gives a good description of what the reader will encounter while reading this post.
  2. Citation: Kubin, E., Puryear, C., Schein, C., & Gray, K. (2021). Personal experiences bridge moral and political divides better than facts. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 118(6), e2008389118.
  3. Thesis: When it comes to political discussions, the most effective way to create mutual respect is through personal experiences rather than facts.
  4. How does the article distinguish facts and personal experience? The article defined facts as empirical evidence and statistics whereas personal experiences were defined as anecdotes from lived events.
  5. Upon what underlying assumption is the article based? Support your response by quoting a passage from the article and explaining how the passage points to an underlying assumption. One assumption that the article utilizes is the idea that the results of studies based in western moral disagreements are applicable to other cultures. In fact, this issue was explicitly pointed out when the authors such as Kubin (2020) conceded that “it is an open question of whether these results apply cross-culturally” but then hand waved it away by stating that “it may be useful to improve respect among the citizens of even one politically fractured country” (p. 7). However, even though the authors claim that the applicability of the data can be ignored, what is important to note is that even in America, different cultures exist and the authors simply did not account for that in the data.
  6. Discuss how this reading could shape the way you conduct or communicate the personal research projects in your groups. This reading indicates that personal experience, more specifically those related to harm, are very effective in inducing mutual respect. Therefore, it would be wise to include anecdotes and first hand stories in addition to statistics. When conducting research for our projects we should also look for experiences as they can convey a sense of truth that seems more objective than data which can result in stronger persuasion on our topic. Overall, this article gives us a new perspective on coming up with ways to bolster our research and create better engagement with our audience.

1/27: Finding Meaning From an Image

  • When looking at the symbol on the board, the first thoughts that came to my mind is that this is may be some sort of religious/cultural symbol.
  • I see familiar signs that I know have related to concepts such as these in the past. Additionally, in the center of the symbol I noticed a swastika. While this symbol was used as the flag of the Nazis during WW2, it seems to be taking on its original cultural meaning as it is surrounded by other symbols that convey these messages such as the Yin and Yang.
  • I also noticed that the primary colors in this symbol are red and gold.

  • Discussion with the group:
    • Johnathan is Chinese so he recognizes the cultural symbols
    • Simon focused on the Buddhist symbols since he saw many of them while visiting China.
    • Jason knew that many of these symbols had historical significance as one of his classes last semester discussed these themes heavily.
    • Nikhil’s association came from his beliefs in Hinduism.

  • My current topic is evaluating the effects of the US federal debt and evaluating whether or not its sustainable in the long run
  • The audience for this paper would be middle class families as well as anyone interested in learning more about federal debt.
