Renewable energy is growing, and a big part of that is wind. We’re all for it, but there’s a growing issue we have to address.
The Dark Side of Wind Power
Conventional wind turbine blades are made of carbon or glass fiber and epoxy, which makes them nondegradable. As a result, decommissioned blades pile up in landfills and will continue to do so as more wind turbines are built/repowered and later decommissioned.
Wind turbine blades are extremely cost and labor intensive to transport once decommissioned. Sometimes wind turbines are not even responsibly sent to landfills and are left near surrounding communities. People who live in communities near wind farms are now rallying against the construction of new wind turbine blades partly due to this dumping issue.
