An Image of the Ashby
Located at 925 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive NW, the Ashby Theater was part of the Bailey theater chain, and ran as one of a only African-American theaters in West Atlanta.
Listen here for a brief history of the Ashby:
Building Memories and Birdhouses
While the original marquee has been gone for over 60 years, the upper white facade is still visible from the street. Although no photos of the original building were found during the course of this project, a recreation of the white building, as seen in the photo above, shows what the Ashby might have looked like. This model is also built to serve as a birdhouse.
The replica contains a special compartment that is their perfect size! Listen to the clip below to hear more about the Bluebirds living in the Atlanta area.
Birdhouses in Washington Park
This building, along with three other replica-birdhouse projects, will be installed in Washington Park, Atlanta, in Fall 2019. There, the buildings will serve a new and interactive purpose telling these and other stories through multi-media.
