Auditory processing disorder (APD), also known as Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), is a hearing disorder that affects how children and adults translate and process sounds. The causes for APD are not entirely known, but early diagnosis and therapeutic procedures can alleviate or fix most of the symptoms. Most cases are seen in children over the age of 7, and can cause inattention, distracted behavior, poor social skills, and delayed language development. Our research group is currently looking to develop mobile applications to help screen and treat APD.
We believe that a mobile app focused on school age children can be an important method to treat and identify symptoms of APD. The BTAP research team would like to create an app that uses sound stimuli and visual clues along with a reward system in order to create distinct sound associations in children. This app would be especially useful for children who experience learning and attention difficulties in school, and clinicians would be able to check up on progress of their patients.
