Aphasia

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that impairs a person’s ability to process language, without impeding intelligence. This disorder is caused by some sort of brain trauma, most commonly a stroke. Depending on the location and severity of the injury, the patient’s ability to speak and/or understand language is compromised.

We have partnered with Dr. Jacqueline Laures-Gore at the Aphasia and Motor Speech Disorders Laboratory at Georgia State University since the team’s creation in 2015. During that time, we have created functioning mobile applications on platforms for both Android and IOS. These apps have been structured to mimic the therapies and treatment methods that are used on actual aphasia patients. Initial testing of these apps as a supplement to traditional speech therapy has been promising, with 2/3 participants with visible improvements. A study is currently being developed by the Aphasia and Motor Speech Disorders Laboratory to test the efficacy of these mobile applications with actual patients on a larger scale.
