Biography

Alessandro Crotta is a MSc Student in Aeronautical Engineering in the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology at Politecnico di Milano. Currently, he holds a visiting scholar position at Georgia Tech’s CEREAL lab, where he is developing his MSc Thesis. His research focuses on high-fidelity CFD methods for reproducing ship-landing aerodynamics. In recognition of his research project, he has been granted a scholarship from Politecnico di Milano. Prior to this, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering and worked as aerodynamicist in the formula student team of Politecnico di Milano.

In his free time, Alessandro enjoys traveling, social activities and building LEGO sets. Moreover, he is a football and motorsport enthusiast.

Research

Alessandro’s research focuses on high-fidelity CFD approaches for rotorcraft operating in ship airwakes. One of the main drivers of this research is to streamline the ship-landing certification process integrating wind tunnel tests and numerical models, reducing the reliance on on-site flight tests. Additionally, the research delves into the scaling effects, exploring how variations in the model’s scale-representing a variation in the Reynolds number-affects rotor loads and consequently, pilot workload.
