Biography

Zoelle Wong is a Rotorcraft PhD Student in the Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech. She is a recipient of the Presidential Fellowship and the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP). She received a BSc degree in Aerospace Engineering and a BA in Mandarin from UT Austin. Her research involves modelling supercritical CO2 and SF6 in the application of high voltage gas circuit breakers.

In her free time, she enjoys watching C-dramas, reading, origami, watercolor painting, learning languages, going on long walks and trying new things. She’s always excited to visit Chinese bakeries and get boba or coffee.

Research

Zoelle is working on the project, Tough and Ecological Supercritical Line Breaker for AC (TESLA) in collaboration between ARPA-E, Georgia Tech, and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the goal of this project is to experiment with using supercritical CO2 instead of SF6 as an arc quenching medium. Specifically, Zoelle’s research is aimed towards investigating the fluid dynamics inside the circuit breaker and to understand arc quenching mechanisms with supercritical CO2.
