Dear Members of the CFM Lab Family:
It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you that Ted Cape passed away two weeks ago, at the young age of 54, while on a business trip. It appears he died due to an undiagnosed heart related problem. The news has come as a total shock to me and it is indeed a very sad day for the CFM Lab. He leaves behind his 13 year old daughter Daniela and wife Karen. A link to his obituary is provided below.

Ted was an integral part of the CFM Lab, starting in the summer of 1986 as a graduate student. He completed his Ph.D. in summer 1991 and then joined the University of Pittsburgh as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Cardiology. Ted had a very productive career in the CFM Lab, co-authoring 8 book chapters, 23 peer reviewed papers and 50 conference presentations. These contributions were based on multiple research projects – beyond his outstanding Ph.D. thesis work – with which Ted was involved while in the CFM Lab. Together with Dr. Robert Levine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, Ted pioneered the quantification of mitral regurgitation using fundamental fluid mechanics and cardiac ultrasound/echocardiography. He also continued to collaborate with the CFM Lab while he was at the University of Pittsburgh, and then went on to pursue a MBA at Harvard in 1997. In addition to his intellectual contributions as a graduate student (and a “confidant” of Dr. Boz), over the years he became a colleague and good friend. He was there at my “bedside” at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, in July 2006 when I underwent surgery for mitral valve repair.
At the end of the day, no matter what, it is heartbreaking for a parent to lose a child. With Ted’s passing, the CFM lab has lost one of its dearest “sons”. Ted was a TRUE SOLDIER who championed our lab’s TRANSLATIONAL PHILOPOSPHY.
