Georgia Tech Student Center

Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 migration | Worked on a 3-person team

We followed the process as a team but I was specifically responsible for organizing user testing and designing and implementing the Exhibition Hall Rooms page.

User Testing

For user testing, I developed questions and tasks to find the current issues in the Drupal 7 iteration so that we can design and implement solutions. I also had participants rank the appearance and usability of the pages. To make data collection easier, I created a google form for my team to fill out as we were conducting interviews.

We collected 7 responses.

Tasks:

  1. Starting from the home page, navigate to the page containing the hours of operation for the Student Center.
  2. Going from the hours of operation page, navigate to the page containing information for the Student Center’s major activities.
  3. Going from the major activities page, navigate to the page with a map of West Village.
  4. Part 1: Going from the West Village map page, navigate to the page containing information about the Student Center Post Office.

Exhibition Hall Rooms

My goal is to give a more modern look, white space, and the amount of scrolling needed for the page. First, I put the buttons in a horizontal row so that the page is more symmetrical and it took away the white space under campus services. Second, I organized the room list into 3 columns instead of 2 which greatly reduced the length of the page. I want to highlight the room list is a content type. I created a form in which content managers can fill out and a thumbnail view will automatically generate and be added to the room list. Additionally, a room page will be generated from the same form which includes room description and gallery.

Georgia Tech Data Excellence

Drupal 8 to WordPress Migration

Worked on a 2-person team. Focused on migrating the Home page, About, and News & Updates page.

Data Excellence Home Page

Challenges:

  • In Drupal 8 (D8), the hexagons were coded in HTML and the code did not transfer well to wordpress.
    • As a solution, I recreated the hexagons in Adobe Illastrator and imported them as media and overlayed the text.
  • For news and updates, D8 has content types that a developer uses that allow users to enter information, auto-generate blocks that are pre-layedout, and automatically place said blocks that make a site content manager friendly. WordPress doesnt have that feature built in.
    • As a solution, I researched and experimented with several potential plugins and found the Formidable Plugin. Its intented use is for having a form on a webpage and taking in viewer input but it works for internal use as well.

Data Excellence About Page

Challenges:

  • Making profile images all the same size. In D8, they have a place for numerical inputs.
    • Solution, sizing the images externally

Smart Cities for All Intern

  • Explored methods of inclusion in Smart City projects that utilize smart technology and ways they have been exclusive to the population. Researched a smart corridor project and a walking school bus project. Studied how the projects were inclusive and exclusive to the audiences and create solutions that would make the project inclusive to people with disabilities and older people.
  • Collaborated as a member of a two-person team who produced a document that smart project teams can refer to for methods on how to be more inclusive, best inclusive practices, and the reason inclusion is so important.
