“freedom park(way)”
chris tromp
freedom [noun] the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.
The expressway I-485 planned as the stone mountain expressway obtained through eminent domain destroyed 500 homes of the copenhill community. Through neighborhood action groups the expressway was stopped. Vacant for 20 years, the construction of the parkway was revamped with the approach of the 1996 Olympics up to ponce de leon avenue. Converted to a linear park called freedom park, the 207 acre area connects a MLK Jr. National Historic sSite to the Carter Center ending at Freedom Park proper. A trail network runs along the parkway connecting downtown Atlanta to Stone Mountain.
“Freedom Park is scar tissue that has now become connective tissue.”
