Tristan Thrall

Tristan is from Raleigh, NC and graduated with his BS in Radiologic Science from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2016. He worked as an MRI technologist at Duke University Hospital between 2016 and 2022, and during this time became increasingly interested in the physical and engineering principles underlying the machines that he operated. He returned to undergraduate education in 2020, and he graduated Summa Cum Laude with his BS in Physics from North Carolina State University in 2022.

Tristan enrolled as an MS student in electrical and computer engineering at The Georgia Institute of Technology in 2022, and as a member of Prof. Muhannad Bakir’s 3D Integrated Systems Research Group completed his MS Thesis research on 3D nanoprinted ferrules for precise alignment and efficient coupling between optical fibers and integrated grating couplers.

Tristan joined Prof. Ali Adibi’s Photonics Research Group as a Ph.D. student in 2024. His research focuses on the utilization of phase change materials in integrated photonics to increase the energy efficiency and performance and reduce the size of devices and systems.
