Why join EMS at Tech?

EMS at Tech is the only collegiate EMS organization at a USG institution, and the second in the entire state of Georgia. We provide a unique and unprecedented opportunity for students to get hands-on experience in crisis management and emergency medical care.

Beyond the experience for members, being part of EMSaT offers the opportunity to make a real difference for the campus. Whether you’re responding to emergencies, teaching CPR, or handing out water, everything we do makes a difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to be an EMT to join EMSaT?

We are open to all regardless of certification! That means that we don’t require you to be an EMT to join. Why? Because we recognize that our organization does a lot more for the campus than just responding to medical emergencies. We teach CPR, pass out water during large events, distribute Narcan on Tech Green, reach out to student organizations, and connect with groups in the wider Atlanta community (just to name a few). Being an EMT will let you respond to 911 calls, but you can have an impact no matter what your certification status is.

What are your attendance/shift-staffing requirements?

To be able to participate in 911 response (what we call “operations”), you must be an active member of EMSaT, including our outreach and education missions. Collegiate EMS is about more than just responding to emergencies. It’s about preventing them from occurring and teaching campus members how to respond before we arrive. We don’t require anyone to staff a shift unless they’re interested in 911 operations, but we do require everyone to participate in outreach, trainings, and meetings if they want to be an active member.

What leadership opportunities exist within EMS at Tech?

Great question! Check out the leadership page. In addition to those positions, we always encourage our members to support outreach, training, and operations in whatever capacities they’re able to. If there’s an initiative you’d love to bring to EMS at Tech, we’re happy to discuss making it happen!

Will this experience help me get into medical school?

We have a lot of medical students in EMSaT and are closely connected with the pre-health advisory board. EMS at Tech can offer members the chance to gain clinical hours, but we don’t prioritize individuals or opportunities based on a need for clinical experience. Keep that in mind, as it may mean that you should seek out additional opportunities to ensure you gain a competitive number of hours. You can reach out to pre-health advising with additional questions.

I’m nervous about being an EMT.

Understandable! Emergency medicine can be scary, especially if you haven’t been trained or introduced. That’s why we help members get certified and provide regular training opportunities to keep everyone’s skills sharp. Plus, the great news about EMS at Tech is that you’ve got an entire team to work with – no one is ever truly doing things alone.
