Episode Description:
Have you ever wondered why two of Georgia’s most highly-ranked universities can’t seem to get along? In this episode of Feuding On and Off the Field, join your hosts, Krissy, Diya, and Audrey, as we take a deep dive into the history of “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate!” This episode focuses on the origins of this rivalry, explores the role of education and privilege in rivalries, and draws connections between rivalries in The Secret History and dark academia spaces online. We start off “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate” with a brief account of how this rivalry came about over one hundred years ago, with tensions boiling over at Georgia Tech and UGA’s first meeting on the football field. We then discuss how for modern students this rivalry is most prevalent in the social media posts during “Hate Week” leading up to the annual Tech vs. UGA game on Thanksgiving weekend. To gain a different perspective, Audrey asked two UGA students and football fans what they thought of the rivalry. They refer to the teasing on Hate Week as “the most fun week”, but also bring up a positive aspect: many student organizations between the two schools collaborate to raise awareness of the big game. Overall, they bring up a commonly expressed point that the teasing in the rivalry is fun for everyone, but they do have respect for both schools and their respective strengths. Next, Krissy explores the dark academia aesthetic in The Secret History and how it displays some of the negative aspects of rivalries, including privilege, education, and an overemphasis on social status. We wrap up the episode discussing how everything surrounding our rivalry and Hate Week helps build our identity as Georgia Tech students and overall school spirit. While it is important to keep the teasing in check, we support healthy competition. THWG!
