Episode Description:
Welcome back to TECHtalk, the podcast discussing anything and everything Georgia Tech! During this episode, “The Secrecy of Buzz,” hosts Elizabeth Childs and Madison Mathews will be discussing our beloved mascot, Buzz. Buzz is zany, recognizable, and a symbol of our school spirit here at Georgia Tech, but he carries an air of mystery and eeriness with him. His identity remains anonymous to the students of Georgia Tech. Today, we introduce and explore a variety of theories about why his identity is kept a secret. Perhaps the original Buzz lost a cheerleading competition or embarrassed himself at tryouts and wanted to steal the show from the school’s cheerleaders. Or, maybe the original Buzz was part of a minority group and wanted to keep this fact a secret. We delve into these theories and more, all while connecting them to the topic of dark academia and dark academia’s genre-defining novel, Donna Tart’s The Secret History. Finally, we discuss why Buzz’s anonymity, and the anonymity of college mascots as a whole, is important in the context of the university’s student body. As you listen, decide for yourself which theory about Buzz’s identity you believe to be true and tune in to future episodes of TECHtalk to learn more about Georgia Tech’s traditions and history.
