What are some common myths we hear every day, and how do these tales bring us together or create divides? As part of our exploration of the Dark Academia aesthetic, we created podcasts to analyze myths around Georgia Tech’s community and connected these ideals to the concept of dark academia. Myths have been used by humans for thousands of years to communicate in and connect our societies and it is particularly evident on college campuses, where myth and tradition are abundant. Some specific themes within the podcasts were how myths can either foster a sense of community or create divides. In particular, TechTalk’s episode explores the reasoning for Buzz’s secret identity, and how this opens up to similar themes of exclusivity in dark academia and the Greek group in The Secret History. Similarly, the episode of Feuding on and Off the Field relays the idea of how Georgia Tech students are united as a result of the rivalry against UGA students. However, there is also an element of division with the students from both schools sometimes taking insults too far and leveraging intellectual superiority as well to provoke their opponents. Finally, the Dark Academic’s debut episode “The Secret History of George P. Burdell” explores how storytelling shapes our beliefs and the stories we are told. Join us in exploring this complex system of stories that unite the students across Georgia Tech’s campus.
