I am a graduate student at Georgia Tech in Computer Science. I’m also a big fan of the Fediverse, the global alliance of independent, interoperable social networks. I am one of the co-authors of the ActivityPub protocol, the enabling technology that connects the fediverse together. As a special project for my coursework at Georgia Tech, I wrote ActivityPub: Programming for the Social Web. And I think we need a Fediverse Club at Georgia Tech.
The Fediverse Club would bring together the GT students interested in distributed social networks. Together, we could explore the protocols and build tools and documents for Fediverse users and our fellow students.
Fediverse users have account names that look like email addresses — username@domain.example. Wouldn’t it be great to have a Fediverse account with your Georgia Tech handle — eprodromou3@gatech.edu? The Fediverse Club could work with OIT to set up and manage a Fediverse server for everyone with a Georgia Tech account.
Starting a new student club at Georgia Tech has a few important requirements: 10 student members, a faculty advisor, a club constitution, and mandatory training. There is a club chartering window open from Sep 8 to Nov 10 2025, and I think there’s a good chance to make it happen.
To get the ball rolling, I’m coordinating a Teams call on Sep 2, 2025, about a week before the club window opens. The call is open to anyone with a Georgia Tech account — faculty, staff, and students. If you’re interested in the Fediverse and have a connection with Georgia Tech, please join the call!
