This work lead by Carter Asef and Markace Rainey entitled “Unknown Metabolite Identification Using Machine Learning Collision Cross-Section Prediction and Tandem Mass Spectrometry” published in Analytical Chemistry demonstrates that ion mobility is capable of providing both high error, but also highly accurate filters through collision cross section measurements for metabolite annotation. Daniel visited the University of Bordeaux in Professor Caroline Tokarski’s group under the Nerem International Travel Award through IBB at Georgia Tech. During his time at UBordeaux he learned state-of-the-art Top-down, HDX, and MALDI applications towards objects of cultural heritage such as paintings and gums to support his ongoing NSF funded projects.

This work in collaboration with Erin Baker titled “Uncovering PFAS and Other Xenobiotics in the Dark Metabolome Using Ion Mobility Spectrometry, Mass Defect Analysis, and Machine Learning” in Environmental Science & Technology identifies features specifice to PFAS, but reveals that there are still many unknowns in untargeted studies, but by incorporating xenobiotics more confident annotations can be achieved.
