Project: Ammoxidation of Ethane over Metal/Zeolite Catalysts
Project Description: Ethylene diamine (EDA) and monoethanol amine (MEA), valuable chemical building blocks, are currently produced starting from the reaction of ethylene with chlorine to form dichloroethane or with oxygen to form ethylene oxide, and subsequent reaction with NH3. However, despite this developed technology, process safety, economics, and environmental impact urge us to develop new synthetic processes. Ethane, the second most abundant gas in shale gas, can be utilized for this, because ammoxidation of ethane may produce acetronitile, which can be further converted into EDA and MEA. Therefore, herein, we investigate the ammoxidation reaction over metal/zeolite catalysts. Our main interests lie in understanding the fundamentals (reaction mechanism, kinetics, and active site), developing new catalysts, and optimizing the reaction condition.
