Project: Silanizing reaction over silica materials in polydimethylsiloxane
Project Description: Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) is a silicone polymer widely applied in electronics, sensors and biomedical systems. However, the mechanical properties, thermal stability and other physical properties of PDMS need to be enhanced via particle fillers. The performance of reinforced PDMS with nanofillers relies on the dispersion of filler particles, and the filler-polymer interaction. Therefore, the fine control of reinforced PDMS composite need in-depth investigation of the reactions between the polymer and nanoparticles. In this project, we aim to study the kinetics of silanization reaction on the surface of silica materials and the hydrolysis process in bulk PDMS, with the help of in situ spectroscopies. The critical parameters in controlling the composite properties that we predict from this project are also helpful for the surface modification of nanoparticles both for fundamental researches and industrial applications.
