Our FLAP MURI team is funded by a DoD Multidisciplinary Universiy Research Initiative (MURI).
Our goal to develop a fast, lexicographic agile perception (FLAP) framework based on
how flying insects integrate multiple streams of information from complex environments, even when task-relevant information is poor, occluded, or distracted. We aim to:
-
- Show how insects achieve fast, decisive action through selective refocusing of attention.
- Demonstrate how this representation is lexicographic, composed of hierarchical, dynamic latent features and modeled using stochastic differential equations to capture perception in the spiking activity of neuron populations, bridging mechanistic and data-driven models.
- Reveal how insect perception is agile, enabling rapid switching of behaviors.
- Realize these principles of efficient and responsive perception in simulations of the insect-inspired FLAP architecture.
