Title: Multiphysics Inversion for Geological Carbon Storage Monitoring

Abstract: Understanding CO2 plume behavior is key to the success of geological carbon storage projects. While multiphase flow equations are capable of modeling the CO2 plume dynamics, these equations rely on having access to the correct permeability model. Unfortunately, accurate information on the permeability is typically unavailable, which greatly jeopardizes our ability to predict CO2 plume behavior. To overcome this problem, we propose a multiphysics inversion technology that calibrates the permeability from observed time-lapse seismic data. A synthetic case study on the Compass model demonstrates that the calibrated permeability can be used to accurately estimate the CO2 plume within the time frame of the monitoring vintages, and also provide reasonable forecasts for future plume behavior without any monitoring data.
