Interpreter: First of all, thank you very much for being here. I think people watching my movie makes me happier than my films bringing any awards. Because to me, film is a way of communication. It embodies my personal observation and thinking. My wish is for my audience to feel what I feel and observe what I observe. The reason why I made this film actually has something to do with the United States. My first visit to the US was in 2011, in California. On that trip, I visited a waste recycling factory in Oakland. It was a huge factory. I was really impressed by the gigantic machinery in the factory. Towards the end of the visit, the manager came to me and said something astonishing. He pointed at the huge trucks in the factory compound and said to me, “They are departing for China.” As it turned out the waste was sorted initially in Oakland and were sent to China immediately. I was surprised and asked him, “Why China? Is it because we have better technology to deal with the waste?” So the year after, following my visit to the US, I visited many locations to investigate this question. I learned that China is the largest trash import country in the world. I visited one of the waste treatment facilities in China. I can tell whether the trash was from the US, Japan, Germany, South Korea, Australia, and so on. But not a single bit of trash was from China. My feeling then was, “China has degenerated into the trash yard of the world.” My film is a response to my question. Why? Why did that happen? Everything is done by people. Our behavior is determined by our world views or our values. However our value system is determined by the social structure we are in. So, superficial is a story of a few minor characters in a certain factory but from the story we can tell a lot about China, Chinese society. It has to do with the environmental issues, with education, and with disparities of wealth. So I think film is a very powerful media to express my thoughts and feelings. And this is why I made this film. Thank you.
