Human-Augmented Analytics Group

Advancing interdisciplinary data science collaboration through innovative research and education

As artificial intelligence transforms every field of science, partnerships between domain experts and AI practitioners have become essential for ensuring ethical, impactful research that serves the greater good. We are a community of researchers committed to democratizing AI implementation across diverse domains while creating collaborative frameworks that benefit all participants.

The Human-Augmented Analytics Group (HAAG) is an experimental virtual laboratory for applied data science collaboration. Founded by Director Breanna Shi in May 2024 as a 4th-year Bioinformatics PhD student with just 15 participants, HAAG has rapidly grown to host 125 researchers across masters, PhD, post-doctoral, and faculty levels.

Our Mission

HAAG serves the greater research community through four core initiatives:

Applied Research Education
Training the next generation of data scientists through hands-on interdisciplinary projects that earn academic credit and research distinctions

Leadership & Project Management Development
Preparing future faculty, PhD researchers, and MBA students with experience-based training in managing complex collaborative research goals

Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
Creating sustainable partnerships between computational and domain experts through structured frameworks

Research Acceleration
Expanding faculty research capacity through virtual laboratory partnerships that minimize advisor fatigue while maximizing research outcomes

Our Programs

Interdisciplinary Data Science Research for Social Good

OMSCS Students • CS 8903 & CS 6999

HAAG’s flagship program allowing faculty to host exploratory data science projects. CS masters students can earn up to 3 semesters of academic credits and a research distinction for contributions to interdisciplinary projects. The course deploys the Framework for Accelerating Interdisciplinary research in Computer Science (FAIR-CS), first proposed by Shi et al. at PEARC 25′.

Research Operations Project Management Practicum

MBA & OMSCS Students• MGT 8803 & CS 8803

A project-driven course where MBA students partner with Online Masters students in Computer Science (OMSCS) to manage AI research projects and propose novel project management solutions for interdisciplinary collaboration. MBA and computing experts work together to solve systematic challenges in AI Implementation.

Undergraduate Certificate in Experience-Based Teaching

Certificate Program • Undergraduate Students

Professional development initiative designed to increase undergraduate proficiency as teaching and research assistants. Students gain hands-on experience in pedagogy, research methodologies, and collaborative project management through structured mentorship and practical application.

Participants develop skills in:

  • Research project facilitation
  • Peer mentoring and collaboration
  • Academic communication and presentation

Transformative & Outcome Driven Partnerships Interfacing Communities (TOPIC)

Program & Departments • International Researchers & Industry Professionals

Here we promote outreach initiatives led jointly by HAAG and community partners. HAAG’s foundational belief is that meaningful research cannot exist without community engagement. We are dedicated to expanding both the accessibility of research itself and the accessibility of its impact. Rather than reinventing solutions, we collaborate with community organizations to achieve mutual goals and shared impact.
