Mastering the Art of Research Writing: Techniques for Success

On December 4th, Human-Augmented Analytics Group invited Katherine Samford, Director of the Language Institute, to share techniques for improving research writing skills. She works with LI faculty and staff to deliver high-quality academic courses and supports for international undergraduate and graduate students, teaching assistants, visiting scholars, post-docs, and faculty on English language, communication, professional development, and teaching skills at GA Tech and across the globe. Her teaching passion is to work with graduate students and other emerging professionals as they progress through their academic journeys into professional spaces. Katherine is an avid yoga practitioner and also loves to eat!


AI and Data in Law: Enhancing Justice through Technology

On November 12th, Professor Alexander, Professor of Law and Ethics at the Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business, discussed how her research is addressing key challenges within the legal system, focusing on the potential of human-centered AI to improve the quality, efficiency, fairness, and accessibility of justice. Professor Alexander introduced her cutting-edge work and highlight several ongoing research projects that apply AI to solve real-world legal challenges. Additionally, she shared opportunities for students to get involved in her Law, Data & Design Lab, where high-impact, interdisciplinary projects offer the chance to make a difference in the legal field.


Federated learning and Privacy – Preserving AI

On November 5th, Human-Augmented Analytics Group hosted a very awesome presentation from Dr. Benjamin Manning on Federated Learning! Dr. Manning is a professional in data science, IoT, and renewable energy, with experience in machine learning, MLOps, and data engineering. His background includes roles at IBM and Lockheed Martin, and he is skilled in cloud computing and deep learning. He also holds certifications and has contributed to publications focused on AI, smart cities, and sustainable energy solutions.

Detecting Gender Bias with AI: Research Insights from Residency Applications

On October 22nd, Thomas Orth, a Senior AI/ML Engineer at Lockheed Martin, presented the work he and a team from Georgia Tech undertook last year in collaboration with a GT professor and another HAAG researcher. Their investigation focused on applying large language models (LLMs) to letters of recommendation for medical anesthesiology residency applications to assess the models’ ability to detect applicant gender. This insightful research delved into the challenges and ethical considerations of using AI in high-stakes decision-making processes.

Pathways to PhD: Navigating Graduate Admissions in Engineering

On September 17th and September 24th, HAAG hosted 2 wonderful conversations with Dr. Bruce Lindvall, the former assistant dean of graduate studies at Northwestern University and author of “Applying for Graduate Admissions in US Engineering Schools” on the topic of best practices for applying to PhD study.
Dr. Lindvall has dedicated his career to helping students achieve higher education degrees and in his retirement he is dedicated to sharing that wealth of knowledge with as many students as possible! We want to extend a huge thank you to Dr. Lindvall for his time and service!
