This summer study abroad program offers a total of 9 Credit Hours. It includes 3 courses, all of which count toward the Global Development Minor. (In fact, you will only be 2 courses shy of completing the minor!) Below you can find information on the courses we offer.
INTA 3303: Political Economy of Development
This course looks the interplay of politics and the economy to understand global development. We will focus on people-centered human development, a bottom-up approach that centers on the richness of human life as opposed to purely economic measures. By the end of this course, students will understand the main causes of underdevelopment; proposed solutions to underdevelopment, and the challenges they face; how to evaluate development projects; and what it means to put humans first in human development.
INTA 4241: Democracy in the Global South
India is the world’s largest democracy, with an impressive track record of elections and astounding political diversity across time and space. This course provides an introduction to the politics and history of modern-day India. By the end of this course, students will have a basic understanding of the political system of India, and the factors that shape it; the ethnic, social, and economic diversity of India, and how this diversity interacts with democracy; and patterns of political behavior in the country.
INTA 4744: Global Development Capstone
The Capstone in Global Development gives students an opportunity to complete a relevant research project on a topic of their choosing. Students pick a topic related to global development and India, and work in groups to produce a capstone informed by both a theoretical understanding of key concepts in global development as well as on-the-ground insights into development challenges and solutions. By the end of this course, students will be able to formulate a meaningful research question; work in interdisciplinary teams toward a shared goal; conduct background and primary research; and distill personal field experiences into relevant insights into broader debates.
