Layered composites with high stiffness and high damping

Engineering and natural materials with high damping tend to have very low stiffness. We demonstrated that layered viscoelastic composites with a stiff constituent and a soft and lossy consistuent can simultaneously achieve high stiffness and high damping. We determine analytical formulae for the effective properties of viscoelastic layered composites in the small strain regime. Using these formulae and multiobjective optimization techniques, we determined the Pareto set of optimal configurations.
