Laila Hossain

Dr. Hossain received her BSc and Msc in Chemical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). She completed her PhD from Monash University, Australia, in developing biodegradable, renewable nanocellulose superabsorbent for personal care products, food packaging and biomedical applications. In this project, she focused on manipulating the preparation methods and method parameters to engineer the mechanical, physical and chemical properties of nanocellulose superabsorbents for different applications. Fundamentals of absorption phases and the understanding of the intrinsic properties of the material were expanded, enabling further customization and application-specific tailoring of nanocellulose superabsorbents.

After completing PhD, Dr. Hossain worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Adelaide, Australia, where she worked on the development of biodegradable active food packaging film from agricultural waste. In her Postdoc at Purdue University, she worked on extraction, functionalization and surface modification of hemp fibers and quantifying their structure-property relationship to produce new and innovative value-added products for the food industry.

She joined the Meredith group in 2024 as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Georgia Tech. Currently, she is working on the development of renewable plastic packaging, specifically plastic bottles for juice and other spoilable products.

In her free time, she enjoys cooking, travelling, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family.
