Rotating Detonation Combustors

Summary:

Rotating detonation engines have been shown to be viable pressure-gain combustion devices. The operability of such combustion systems and the manner in which the performance of these systems scale are still developing areas of investigation. The principle of the RDE is based on the formation of continuously propagating detonation in a disk-like combustion chamber (toroidal or ring-like shape). The purpose of this research is to explore gaseous phase and coal-fired rotating detonation combustors (RDC) operability, dynamics, and performance over a range of conditions relevant to topping cycle integration using high-fidelity computational simulations. Understading the physical mechanisms of rotating detonation combustion will lead to effectively exploiting the constant volume combustion technology for proliferation of efficient next-generation energy systems.
