Getting Github Student Dev Pack: 4 Ways (aka How to Prove You’re a Student)
On the main free / discounts / resources page, I mention how to get the Github Student Developer Pack.
There’s three ways to prove you are a student:
- Get a Buzzcard
- Use your tuition receipt
- Academic Standing Verification / Transient Letter
- Github CLI
BUZZCARD / TUITION RECEIPT
The first two are pretty clear, there’s instructions to get a BuzzCard for remote students on the home page.
ACADEMIC STANDING VERIFICATION
The third item, a student wrote up the process, much thanks to him:
To get the proof of enrollment document, I believe you go Buzzport > Registration (OSCAR) > Students [tab along the top] > Academic Verification > Academic Verification (yes, again) > Choose the current term, then for verification type I think you want “Academic Standing Verification.” That will take you to a form to fill out with your address, etc. for them to mail you the document.
Alternate path to the same page is Buzzport > “Student Records” link in the “Student Resources” section on the right > Verification Requests > Choose term and Verification Type
Only caveat is I took one more look at my doc from last year, and it does say “Enrollment Verification” but I can’t find that, so I’m pretty sure this “Academic Standing Verification” will do the trick. It’s also possible “Transient Letter” is what you want.
Note on Screenshots: the first screenshot is what you get to via the first navigational path, and the second screenshot is what you get to at the end of the alternate path described above. They both lead to the same doc, but look different. People shouldn’t think the second screenshot is what you see after clicking “Continue” on the first.

GITHUB CLI
The fourth item, Github CLI, I haven’t tried. My understanding is there’s somewhere to choose “Enterprise Server” and then “it gives you a SSO URL so it simplifies the token setup for https.” (per a slack user)
CONSIDERATIONS
There was some discussion on Slack on 8/19/24 that the Github department that approves the Student Packs are inconsistent and/or picky about off campus students:
"if I can vent a little about github’s verification process, once you have this doc, you have to take a live picture of it using their little web app. I was ready to write an issue for their repo for it, so maybe they’ve corrected it, but this was by far the most annoying part. The webcam on my laptop could never get a high-enough res to take it. So I used my phone. But whenever I tried to swap to one of the rear cameras (which were options in a drop-down menu on the webpage), the preview went away. So I had to use the front-facing, selfie camera, while awkwardly looking at the screen trying to align it over the doc, but everything was reverse-sensing. Translation wasn’t so hard to figure out, but rotational alignment was
. And, like, I’ve professionally evaluated human-machine control systems. I almost threw my phone out the window. Eventually got it done though"
Now, I have applied 9 times to the Github program and been turned down every time. Here’s the message they sent me on my last attempt:
