Now Available: Fundamentals of Chemistry Open Course!

A new course titled Fundamentals of Chemistry is now available through the Open Course Project. The course is designed for students with no prior background in chemistry or those looking to review key ideas from high school chemistry. It includes seven modules:

  1. Foundations
  2. What is a “Chemical Species”?
  3. Representing Amounts of Substances
  4. Describing Chemical and Physical Changes
  5. Energy and Chemistry
  6. Drawing and Interpreting Lewis Structures
  7. Succeeding in College Chemistry

The course incorporates two “big ideas” helpful for the effective study of chemistry. Proportional reasoning is used as an alternative to dimensional analysis when solving quantitative problems and submicroscopic models of matter and chemical change are emphasized as a key visualization tool. The aim of both big ideas is to move the student away from memorization and rote learning and towards conceptual understanding.

Georgia Tech students can join the course on Canvas using this link to complete assessments. Anyone can view course materials on Canvas here or review lecture slides and other course materials on Github. Video lectures are currently in development and will be posted to Canvas and a YouTube playlist in the Fall 2025 semester.
