We’re focusing on analyzing the principles of equity in the design and construction of The Kendeda Building. This will translate to the enhancement of equity components in rating systems that can be applied to engineering capstone projects and other design/user-based methods in the Georgia Tech community and beyond.

Our Goal
Our goal is to progress and promote equity in the sustainable building sector. We are contributing to this by implementing research focused on developing rating systems for sustainable infrastructure that put equity first.
Current Project
We are currently partnering with the NAACP Centering Equity in the Sustainable Building Sector initiative and The International Living Future Institute (ILFI), to learn about and compare sustainability rating systems and develop proposals for incorporating equity more deeply.
The Five Equity Fundamentals
The Serve Learn Sustain (SLS) Fundamentals of Equity are guidelines that our team references and follows in our directives in promoting equity in sustainable infrastructure rating systems. These five fundamentals identify what it means for a building to be equitable. Learn More
Culture: A Right to Belong
All people must feel like they have a right to be inside of and able to use a building.
Community Engagement
An equitable building must seize every opportunity to engage and teach its community.
Enhance the Local Environment
An equitable building will contribute to, or at the very least, not negatively impact its surrounding environment.
Economic Justice
An equitable building shall not exacerbate income inequality.
Define and Track Equity
There must be a clear definition of equity with examples and trackable metrics.
The Living Building Challenge
The Living Building Challenge (LBC) is a rigorous set of seven petals (requirements) that set a standard for sustainable architecture. Our team focuses on the Equity Petal which aligns with our objective to quantify and incorporate equity in rating sustainable buildings. These requirements as well as The Kendeda Building are guidelines for our goals and pursuits. Read More
