Hi, my name is Syon Schlecht and I am a an undergraduate student at Georgia Tech, pursuing a B.S. in Biochemistry. I currently work as a laboratory coordinator for the College of Sciences and an undergraduate instructional assistant for the School of Biosciences. I earned my BACE certificate in Biotechnology from the University of Florida and have a strong background in chemical biology. My research focuses on methods of rational drug design in order to effectively target proteins implicated in cancer. This covers a broad range of research, investigating the complex biochemistry of these proteins, identifying promising new targets, synthesizing novel drugs that interact with these proteins, and designing novel assays to measure their effectiveness. I am involved heavily in research for the betterment of society and humanity as well as in educating the next generation of scientists. I have designed and synthesized novel drug candidates targeting these proteins (such as DHFR and NF-kB), developed and curated course materials for introductory biology, designed a series of educational materials and protocols for a biotechnology curriculum. I am passionate about science education and have created content for a variety of courses, where I have made my resources and materials open access on my page. I have presented my research at a variety of conferences (including the annual ACS conference), have published my findings in various scientific journals, and have been citied in numerous scholarly sources (including in Nature). I have been the recipient of several honors and awards, including being named a Next Generation Chemical Scientist by the American Chemical Society. I am actively a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
