Improving Quality of Life and Strengthening Communities Beyond the Classroom

We serve people around the world and focus on diverse issues with an open and innovative approach.

Innovations that Venture toward UN Sustainability

Tech for Good strives to make the world a better place through technological innovation. The program is open to everyone, and its innovations are making headway in the realization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Build a Better Tomorrow

Water Malawi

Our mission is to strengthen communities through technology and innovation. Our current project aims to provide clean water for students in Malawi. We seek volunteers to assist in creating a system that will monitor water quality, issue notifications for potential dangers, and generate actionable data insights. Join us and develop an integrated and seamless system to improve water quality.

Team Icarus

Work with us on agile development for exploring and testing solar components for highly usable mobile consumer solar products. Learn more about solar panels and the overall solar system while achieving a product that contains high usability and aesthetic design. This project focuses on UN sustainability goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

Campus Energy Saving

As part of our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 7—Affordable and Clean Energy, our student-led Tech for Good team has developed a smart energy-saving system that leverages sensors to monitor temperature and humidity across various campus indoor spaces. By automatically adjusting air conditioning based on room occupancy and the status of doors and windows, this initiative not only conserves energy but also exemplifies innovative, practical sustainability in action. Currently piloted in the campus gym, we are analyzing pre- and post-implementation energy data to create a visual presentation for the entire school community, with plans to expand to more areas on campus.

Mini App for Visually Impaired Individuals

The Mini App for Visually Impaired Individuals is a transformative tool designed to enhance accessibility for the blind community. This user-friendly app allows visually impaired users to browse, register, and participate in various educational courses and activities such as programming, painting, and calligraphy. With features tailored to maximize usability for the visually impaired, the app also tracks and records participation time for each session. It’s not just an app; it’s a gateway to empowerment, education, and community for visually impaired individuals.

Handy Health

Introducing a cutting-edge hand training device designed specifically for seniors, the product combines advanced sensor technology with customized training programs to help restore and enhance hand strength. It measures grip force and adapts to individual needs, ensuring a gradual and effective rehabilitation process. Designed with usability and comfort in mind, it’s accessible and enjoyable for all elderly users. This device supports seniors in regaining hand mobility, empowering them to lead more independent and fulfilling lives.

2024 GTSI Accessibility Day

Organized by the Tech for Good club, the event features a collaboration between students and faculty, inviting experts from the Information Accessibility Research Society and technical engineers from the industry to share their experiences. The venue includes four themed accessibility experience scenarios—cognitive, physiological, visual, and auditory—allowing participants to truly understand the accessibility needs of different groups and the significance of constructing accessible environments.

Plug-in for individuals with cognitive challenges

Our project focuses on improving web accessibility for visually impaired users and individuals with cognitive challenges. We developed a Chrome plugin that addresses common issues like missing image descriptions, unreadable text, and complex sentence structures. The plugin uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and a Large Language Model (LLM) to generate alt text for images, rephrase long or difficult sentences into simpler ones, and adjust font styles for better readability. Key features include local processing for privacy, personalized user options, and efficient performance. This plugin enhances the browsing experience for screen reader users and people with cognitive issues, making the web more inclusive and user-friendly.

Women in Tech

As a vital topic worldwide, women in tech are closely linked to equality-driven Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). GTSI’s Tech for Good club collaborated with GT to invite Grace, Founder, and CEO of a social enterprise focused on caregiving innovation, and Rachel, a PhD candidate at GT, to deliver a lecture at the Women in Tech seminar.

Grace shared her inspiring journey during the workshop, engaging audiences from Atlanta and beyond. Rachel discussed her work in creating educational tools accessible to neurodivergent individuals. Their session received very positive feedback from both the organizers and attendees, highlighting the impact of her insights and delivery.
