Concussion

Symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Loss of memory
  • Confusion
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Delayed response to questions
  • Appearing dazed
  • Fatigue
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Sensitivity to light and noise

 

Causes:

  • Blow to the head
    • Sports
    • Car accidents
    • Being violently shaken

Treatments:

  • Rest (physically and mentally)
  • Pain relievers
  • Avoid visual and sensory stimuli
  • No physical activity

When to see a doctor:

  • See a doctor in 1-2 days if head injury is acquired
  • Emergency care when there is
    • Repeated vomiting
    • Loss of consciousness is longer than 30 seconds
    • Headache that gets worse over time
    • Change in personality
    • Changes in physical coordination
    • Confusion
    • Slurred speech
    • Seizures
