Brown Rot
Brown Rot occurs when cellulose has rotted away leaving wood more brittle and rigid. The color brown is because the carbohydrates are removed, leaving brownish oxidized lignin. As with many rot conditions, the degree of degradation is in proportion to the amount of moisture in the fibers and in most cases the wooden element needs to be replaced and the moisture source removed.
