Punky Wood
Punky wood is softened wood that gives when penetrated by a sharp object such as an icepick. It may be located below a painted surface, but has sustained unseen moisture or fungal growth and will need to be replaced with new wood or a dutchman patch. Evidence of peeling paint is often an indicator that the wood below has rotted and become “punky” or soft. See also Soft Rot – SF
