Soft Rot

Soft rot is found in wood that is in touch with the ground or where there is a lot of standing moisture, such as piling, fence posts or at windowsills. Moisture and therefore, rot, migrates with the grain sometimes unseen under painted surfaces or in areas of wet and dry cycles. Evidence may be from discolored paint finishes. See punky wood (PU). It may be necessary to add new wooden members where moisture has rotted wood, often unseen until probed with a sharp pick.
