Surface Deterioration
Surface deterioration is generally from exterior elements being exposed to moisture and in some cases can seriously undermine the structure below. Moisture from failed gutters and downspouts or poor grading around foundations can be detected by deteriorated surfaces. If paint surfaces are flaking, peeling or otherwise not protecting the wood, moisture can get into the siding or framing. This is particularly a problem with surfaced eroded by storms, clinging vines, or wind carrying abrasive grit, such as sand. Depending on the severity of the elements or substructure, replacement or repainting will probably be necessary. See Missing Paint – (MP).
