Termite

Subterranean termites generally live in soil and are attracted to damp or wet wood to feed on. By constructing mud tunnels, they can travel from basements to attics and use bacteria in their gut to break down the cellulose fibers in wood for their survival. Evidence of termites may be observed as swarms at dusk in spring months as part of mating season or to establish new colonies when existing nests are full. It is sometimes difficult to find termite damage, for example under damp window sills, until elements are severely compromised. Termites can be treated following US Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for handling chemicals. Ground areas can be baited once termites are eradicated. Damage wood needs to be replaced and annual inspections are a good idea to keep termites from re-establishing colonies.
