ALZ Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease

November 5, 2018 by Kathleen Jordan

Dr. Cassie Mitchell’s research group, The Laboratory for Pathology Dynamics (Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech-Emory) had a wonderful time at the ALZ Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease on October 13, 2018, at Kennesaw State University, Atlanta, GA.  The three mile ALZ Walk was one many held nationwide to fundraise for research supported by the Alzheimer’s Association.  This was one of the lab’s chosen community service projects for this semester–something Dr. Mitchell initiated to help build good research and community ties and “lab culture” by connecting the students with the patients and families for whom they are trying to help with their research projects in the lab.  Attached is a picture from the professional photographer that has the lab pictured with their sign at the ALZWalk (taken by TrueSpeedPhoto, but no copyright on it).   The Laboratory for Pathology Dynamics was thrilled to be able to raise money (about $1400) and do the walk together as a research lab to help give back and show their support for Alzheimer’s patients both inside and outside the research lab setting. The Laboratory for Pathology Dynamics was happy to give time and support back to the Alzheimer’s Research who recently funded them via the 2018 Alzheimer’s Association Research Grant to Promote Diversity.  Dr. Mitchell and her students are excited for the results to come out as they continue to quilt thousands or articles worth of disparate Alzheimer’s data into predictions that can expedite Alzheimer’s clinical success.

Our Lab in the News: Alzheimer’s Association Award

September 27, 2018 by Kathleen Jordan

Our lab was honored to receive a grant from the Alzheimer’s Association for the diligent work in trying to uncover the mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease. We are very proud to receive this grant and aim to continue making progress on this front. Check out the BME department press release for more information!

New Lab Publication: Associative Increases in ALS Survival Duration With Bi-PAP Usage

July 12, 2018 by Kathleen Jordan

Congratulations to Nishad Khamankar, the first author of the highly anticipated bi-level positive airway pressure (Bi-PAP) for ALS. This paper was published in Frontiers in Neurology and examines the benefits of daily Bi-PAP and cough assist on the survival of ALS patients. This paper has helped move ALS care forward and our lab is very proud of Nishad for his work.

New Lab Publication: Complexity in ALS Survival Prediction

July 5, 2018 by Kathleen Jordan

This is the long awaited Pfohl 2018 et. al. article in Frontiers in Neuroinformatics, which used a machine learning model to predict and classify ALS clinical survival.  This paper showcases where our lab is headed in terms of potential complexity and machine learning approaches to predictive medicine.

This paper has an amazing string of successful co-authors who were all undergrad alums in the lab.  Stephen Pfohl is now an NSF fellow getting a PhD in Bioinformatics at Stanford, Renaid Kim is getting an MD-PhD at University of Michigan Medical Scientist Training Program, and Grant Coan is getting his MD at University of Texas at San Antonio.
