Program Timeline

 

In their first fall, Bridge Fellows will serves as full teaching assistants (class will have been assigned prior to arriving on campus). Bridge Fellows will take 2 core courses and 1 seminar course (CHEM 8000: Seminar- a 1 credit pass-fail course based on attendance at SoCB Colloquia). This reduced load (compared to standard Ph.D. requirements) allows the Bridge student the opportunity to sit in on undergraduate chemistry courses for remediation if needed.

In the first spring, Bridge Fellows will not have any teaching assistant responsibilities and will instead serve as research assistants. Bridge Fellows will take 1 core course, 1 elective, CHEM 8000, and CHEM 8902: Information Resources Seminar. This added seminar course introduces students to topics such as responsible conduct of research, scientific ethics, chemical safety, intellectual property, career opportunities, diversity workforce issues, and research proposal development.

In their first summer, Bridge Fellows will be enrolled in CHEM 7001: Introduction to Research. The Fellows will again have no teaching assistant responsibilities and will instead serve as research assistants.

In their second fall, Fellows will enroll in CHEM 8903: Student Seminar (3 credits). This course consists of seminars, which are presented by the students on topics from recent literature and their own research.

In their second spring, Fellows will write a masters thesis and defend it to their appointed committee.
