“Triangular Diplomacy and the Crisis in Ukraine: The European Union, The United States and the Russian Federation” Workshop

“Triangular Diplomacy and the Crisis in Ukraine:  The European Union, The United States and the Russian Federation”, Workshop, Georgia Institute of Technology, 1-2 May 2015.  This international, interdisciplinary workshop involved presentations by A. Cooper Drury (University of Missouri); Valentina Feklyunina (Newcastle University); Deborah Larson (University of California, Los Angeles); Jeffrey Mankoff (Center for Strategic and International Studies); Valentyna Romanova (Institute for Strategic Studies “New Ukraine” – Kyiv); and Richard Whitman (University of Kent), as well as several Georgia Tech faculty: Vicki Birchfield (Nunn School); Miklaus Fabry (Nunn School); Jarrod Hayes (Nunn School); Dina Khapaeva (Modern Languages) , Nikolay Koposov (History, Technology, and Society); Alasdair Young (Nunn School).  Undergraduate; masters and PhD students and faculty from the Nunn School; members of the local business community and a representative from the US Army also attended.  The workshop explored the initial reactions of the US and the EU to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine; how Russia has responded to that reaction; and how their reactions are viewed from Ukraine.  These actor perspectives were complemented by analyses of cross-cutting issues – the imposition and effectiveness of sanctions and rival invocations of international law – and examinations of the cultures and identities underpinning the actors’ positions.  This project is thus distinctive in that it involves an explicitly comparative analysis of foreign policies and adopts a 360⁰ perspective.  The papers are being revised for publication in an edited volume.
