The Program

We are Microbiologists Incubating Cross-Disciplinary Research Opportunities at Georgia Tech(MICRO@GT)! Our summer REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program is currently pending approval and support by the National Science Foundation (NSF). MICRO@GT aims to sponsor 10 visiting participants for a 10-week summer research experience in Atlanta, GA. A core goal of the program is to recruit students locally and nationally from home institutions with limited research opportunities in STEM or from groups systematically underrepresented in STEM. Not only will participants receive a mentored, hands-on research experience studying microbial systems, but also develop skills to communicate their research across disciplines. A cross-disciplinary intellectual environment will be fostered at two scales. Students will belong to the MICRO@GT cohort, which includes labs in three research themes:

  • Ecology & Evolutionary Processes (EEP)
  • Cellular & Molecular Mechanisms (CMM)
  • Synthetic Biology & Biophysics (SBB

Students will also engage with the larger cohort of other REU programs across Georgia Tech’s College of Sciences, sharing professional development and networking opportunities with trainees conducting research in other scientific areas.

Overview

Our MICRO@GT summer research program will place you with a faculty mentor for a 10-week summer period spanning from Sunday May 21nd, 2023 to Friday, July 28th, 2023. You’ll design a research project, carry it out and present the results to the professors and students in a final symposium. You will receive a stipend amount of $5250 as well as a $1000 food allowance. To live on campus safely, you will also be provided an individual bedroom with shared kitchen facilities in an environment that is structured based on CDC, state and federal guidelines. Your summer cohort will engage in activities specific to MICRO@GT, but also interact and be co-housed with participants in the other College of Sciences REU programs.

Our MICRO@GT faculty (in Biological Sciences, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Physics) include many researchers who are members of Georgia Tech’s Center for Microbial Dynamics and Infection (CMDI), a focal point for microbial research on campus.
