Certain chemicals, when dissolved in water, make the water acidic or basic
-
What are some examples of acidic or basic things?

-
How is acidity measured
- We use pH to measure how acidic or basic a substance is
- pH is a logarithmic scale, it varies from 0, the most acidic, to 14, the most basic
- Examples: a solution with a pH of 1 contains 0.1 moles of acid per liter; a solution with a pH of 4 contains 0.0001 or 10-4 moles of acid per liter.
pH scale of common products
- If you added acid to a glass of water so it decreased in pH from 7 to 6 how much more acidic chemicals are in the water?
