1. Who should apply?
Applicants are expected to be rising sophomores or juniors at their home institution. All majors are welcome to apply, but applicants are expected to have taken some form of general chemistry.
2. Is the program open to international students (non-US citizens or permanent residents)?
Yes.
3. Is a stipend provided for the STACC workshop?
No, a stipend will not be provided as the program is a pedagogical workshop.
4. Is there a cost to participate in the STACC workshop?
No. The STACC workshop is free. However, students will need to have access to a personal computer.
5. Is the workshop held in person or virtually?
The STACC workshop is held purely virtually and in a synchronous fashion. This allows for students all over the country to participate in the program.
6. What is the deadline for the application?
The deadline for receipt of applications is April 15th.
7. Are letters of recommendations required?
No, letters of recommendation are not required for the application. Please see the application information page for what material is required to apply.
8. How are participants selected?
The STACC workshop management team will review applications. The most important factor in selecting participants is a strong interest in the program and learning more about theoretical/computational chemistry as a whole. Therefore, the most emphasis will be placed on the personal statement.
9. I have no prior experience with theoretical/computational techniques. Am I at a disadvantage in applying?
No! The STACC program is specifically designed to target students who have no prior experience in the area of theoretical/computational chemistry nor have any background in programming.
10. How are participants notified of decisions?
STACC workshop applicants that are selected will receive an invitation to participate by email from the STACC workshop management team. They will be asked to respond to the invitation within two weeks. Extensions will be granted for extenuating circumstances.
11. When will participants be notified of decisions?
Selected participants will be notified by the end of April.
