Some findings of phonetic research
(2024) Language-Specific Phonology of Heritage Perception: The Case of Korean Intervocalic Stops
Mean percentages of Korean, Mandarin, English, and heritage speakers’ judgments along the VOT continuum of Korean stops: the L2 groups of L1 Mandarin and L1 English speakers show a classic categorical perception in discriminating VOT differences, while monolingual Korean and heritage speakers’ pattern showing no categorical perception was significantly different from that of the other two groups.
The unexpected insensitivity or inattention to the VOT variation of Heritage listeners suggests that the linguistic behavior of Heritage listeners resembles that of native listeners in their abstraction away from phonologically irrelevant phonetic details, and their perception has been optimized to signal to only those aspects that are relevant to the phonemic cues in the target language.
(2021) Hyper-articulation effects in Korean glides by heritage language learners
Mean F0 (Bark) values for the two speaking styles at three timings (i.e., syllable onset, vowel midpoint, and syllable offset) for all ten speakers. The dashed line indicates casual speech and the solid line indicates clear speech.
Boxplot of F0 (Bark) values at syllable offset, broken down by each speaker and by speaking style (light boxes ‘casual speech’; dark boxes ‘clear speech’). Speakers are arranged by gender (i.e., 1-5 are females; 6-10 are males). Asterisks indicate that the syllable duration change was significant (p < 0.01) for each speaker, according to speaking style.
