Mitral
In Vitro Mitral Regurgitation Set Up
Shelley Gooden
Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most common valvular issue, where the two leaflets of the mitral valve do not meet to close completely. Often times, surgical interventions are used to treat MR. However, some patients pose high risk for surgery. An alternative is transcatheter edge-to-edge repair. Sometimes, a single device is not enough to sufficiently reduce regurgitation, requiring use of a second clip. Because of this, it is necessary to assess the change of the mitral pressure gradient after one clip in order to determine if and where a second clip should be placed such that other negative implications, such as tissue damage or stenosis, do not arise. Current work on this project involves expanding the present flow loop to include the left ventricle and a mitral valve chamber that allows for papillary muscle control to simulate regurgitant conditions, then using the set up to assess hemodynamics in different MR etiologies.
